Hello,

To clarify, the notification that is on the site right now:

is NOT related to the conversation going on here.

1. We started migrating a part of our infrastructure that holds Follower data from one server to another server. This is why Followers data activity was held during the database move.

2. This migration DOES NOT solve the issue of perceived loss of Followers or Follower count stuck conversations that have been ongoing on the forum for some time.

@LouieShowers, I hope you don't mind me picking on your profile. I had a look at your Followers and on the first page I saw a pattern that may not be so obvious at first glance but have a look for yourself:

https://soundcloud.com/user576033329
https://soundcloud.com/user983206842
https://soundcloud.com/petralongoria
https://soundcloud.com/jesus-flores-guitarrista
https://soundcloud.com/user339571621

Do you see that all of these followers have almost the same Stream, images, reposts etc. These are fake accounts. These eventually will get detected by our Trust and Safety team and when they do you will lose these followers and your count will decrease further. We do not notify you when this happens so at any moment you can just see a lower number than what you thought you had. This will appear especially puzzling if you have received new followers in the meantime and your count is still lower. This is precisely the confusion that many of our users have around Followers. Does this make sense?

You may ask yourself, why don't we just get rid of all of them? Spam accounts is a serious issue on many platforms. These accounts are created the same exact way you created your own account: with an email, an image etc. There is nothing that indicates the account is fake until activity progresses on the accounts. Normally, I would remove the above mentioned profiles once I spot them but I have not reported them yet for the sake of this thread, so that you can have a visual example of what we see and what causes this problem.

Also, chances are that the spammers behind these fake accounts may see this public post and start changing the images so that they again can evade detection.

There is not a single reason that makes sense on why we would do this on purpose or ignore the problem. That would be the same as Youtube taking away views, Facebook taking away your friends or McDonalds taking away the burger on your bun. It would only hurt our business.

Until we can come up with the technology to combat these fake accounts (imagine a robot vs robot all out war here) we are one step behind and deleting these accounts only after detection.

I sincerely hope you believe that I am not bullsh**ing you all and that I am explaining this clearly enough for everyone here to understand.

I'll check back on this thread a few times today so if you see this and have follow up questions about what I just explained than I'll try my best to answer.

same, i get both fake followers and real ones... but often the real ones get taken off and not the fake ones. keep lagging at different levels for a while now. I've noticed sometimes the page displays a higher number before fully loading if there's a new follower...but then that higher number eventually disappears leaving only the lower number..
Well don't have time to check who are they bots or fakes :)
But there are some artists too who follow me and then afterwards maybe un-follow me I don't know why they do that, maybe thinking to get free follow back from me.
Anyways thanks for your concern.
Have a good day :))

Well something strange is going on here I have noticed people follow me I get notification too, but followers numbers remains same for not known reason.
Hope this will be fixed.
Thank You.

Are you checking the accounts that you get notifications about them following you to see if they look genuine? They might be fake accounts that got reported by someone else and have been deleted.
If this is you: https://soundcloud.com/1hmnc
I can see a few suspect accounts just in the top lines of your followers. The one calling themselves maryagnesdowd90 is a porn spam bot and might be deleted by the time you see this. You've also one of the many accounts that just reposts tracks from an unofficial JackU account: https://soundcloud.com/user-54683186
User 220378512 and User 471470563 look a bit strange. Same profile picture and saying "I assist musicians" but they don't know how to set up a SoundCloud profile so I wouldn't trust them for much assistance.

Thank You.
I had over 11000 followers a couple of weeks ago, then it was reduced to 10228 for some reason. And each day my followers gets reduced to exactly 10228 followers, even if I get approximately 20-30 new followers per day
The issue has been sorted on my account! I don't know about you. otherwise it shouldn't be long. All my followers appeared suddenly
Apparently not for a lot of people...

Hi,

You will receive notifications when people follow you, but not when users 'unfollow' you. This means in the same time that people follow you (which you're notified for), other followers may have un-followed you, which would lead your followers count not increasing by the amount that you were notified for.
People can un-follow for a few reasons:

People choose to unfollow you.People remove their accounts. Batches of spam accounts which are in your followers have been removed from the platform.
Please note: Due to caching the actual numbers displayed on follows, won't re-adjust until an action is made on your account. An action could be uploading a track, following someone new, or making any edits to your profile.

I am appalled by how long this has been going on. Gina, are we still suggesting that this is due to spam accounts?? I really am baffled that a hugely successful* company cannot find a programmer to fix a ticker. ABSOLUTELY INFURIATING

same problem here!!! its anoying!!
fix it now!!
This is absolute rubbish Gina, stop copying and pasting that answer each time please.

I have hundreds of people who follow me regularly, and i KNOW not many people unfollow me, so please don't say that.

Just admit that soundcloud has messed up. Again.

Same Here!, Soundcloud needs to admit the website is broken, AND FIX THIER SH*T
The problem is always there for me. I had 5 followers yesterday and none is counted , and it's like that for days now!
It's really annoying...
Yes, same here with me, finally!! I'm happy the problem is solved and hope all others dealing with the same issue also have their followers back:)!

same here! I'm having problems with my followers count it to hasn't changed. I even have confirmation from family members following me and no count change if soundcloud doesn't address this issue soon I'm going to start informing everyone about the poor quality customer service I'm receiving from cloud, as well as not renewing my service I hope this site doesn't betray my trust.

This was stated a few days ago on the site:

'February 16th 11:20 CET/ 02:20 PST
This part of the maintenance is now complete and followers should now be saved correctly on you profile. However, Follower counts will remain frozen for now. More info coming soon.'

I really hope more information is coming soon, including a message that the frozen counts-problem has been solved as this is a serious issue that does no good for all the involved artist/musicians.

Fair enough Gina! Every Gina I know is pretty cool, so. I'm going to go out on a limb here... I want to love SoundCloud wholeheartedly again. I would love this new migration to cut down latency times in registering stats.. That sounds exciting. I would love to have the option to sort my followers chronologically. I understand the idea ofna positive user experience and that Facebook does not sort followers chronologically, but trying to be a professional or semi professional musician and paying for an account to help you with extra marketing features and concise traceability of my fan base is honestly top of my priority list. There are many things that I think could be tweaked to allow paid users a tad more freedom and flexibility. Thanks again for your time and professionalism. Cheers,

@Benjamin - I'm not implying all your followers are fake, if it was then you probably paid some shady site to add followers for you. I took a quick look there are some obvious fake ones (profiles with no image and very low activity).

The Follower refresh problem you're describing is also normal as new Follower data can sometimes take 24 hr to be fully registered into your stats. The database migration we did with our Followers was actually about this. We had this data on a server that was growing overloaded so we had to move this to a new server so that when someone follows you, the activity is received and registered faster. You can test this with other activities, try the action then go back and forth on the page it may or may not stick right away. You can Google 'cache on a website" if you want to know more details about this.

@Louie - Thank you for reading the lengthy post and for being my guinea pig. To be honest it can be incredibly frustrating and I realise that I am not the only frustrated party here. Spammers suck, plain and simple. Their actions cause a lot of extra work for us and cause a lot of confusion for our users. I see posts like this all day and I continuously report them to our Trust and Safety team sometimes even believing myself that maybe there is a follower bug but behind every investigation we find spam again.

About your proposal, notifying users of when a Follower unfollows them has been a topic of conversation on our team however it is a negative user experience. Think about it, do you ever get notices if someone un-friends you on Facebook? No. Thats because online platforms want you to be motivated by positive community engagement. We could have the option available for a user to turn negative notifications on and off but then we would need to hire an engineer to build that or take engineering resources away from another team to have that built. We are hiring btw so it's not that we aren't trying to get more help :)

Our efforts right now are on working on systems that can hopefully stay a step ahead of the spam.

You are right Benjamin! At first it changed to 9697 when I followed you but when I look at your page a minute later, it's 9696 again. I really hope Soundcloud will make it work again and not just say it's all about spamming. Dear Gina can you tell us when the maintenance is finished and the Followers will start functioning again? Thanks!

Hi Gina,
I don't mind at all that you used my profile as an example. I actually appreciate it very much! I know that I have been vocal about this issue (but not in an accusatory or nasty way) . I hope you can see this from all angles and understand that at least in my case, i love soundcloud..like anything else, it's not perfect, but i love it just the same.

After reading you response, I get the impression that you are somewhat frustrated with this dilemma on your end as well.

Thanks for taking the time to provide a more detailed and empathetic explanation of what is happening here. I do not think that you are BS ing either... But as you've indicated, the maintenance that is being done is unrelated to this issue, and presumably would not change the way followers are calculated... Regretfully, I still will have to reevaluate if a paid account is really something in my best interest as things stand.

I do have a pragmatic solution/suggestion though. I've suggested in another post that perhaps we should be able to to get notified of unfollowers or deleted /spam accounts. Please make this happen and i will be a pro user for life _!

Even if this notification was available and applicable to the desktop version of soundcloud for PAID USERS ONLY, i think that would be a great way to be transparent and truly deliver extra and accurate statistics that users like myself pay for and cherish!

I imagine that you must be very busy, but I would greatly appreciate some official feedback on my proposal of being notified of unfollowers /administrative deletion of accounts for paid users only.

I am definitely willing to keep an open mind about this and I am eager to hear back from you.

Have a great day,
Louie

There are more concerns.. For upward of a year people have reported this issue who have pro and paid accounts, only to be told an explanation that was evidently wrong. I would like a partial credit before I renew. I and others have cancelled their auto renew date.
