Track quality becomes terrible on phone

When I upload tracks onto my soundcloud account and play them on the computer they sound perfectly fine. But when I try to play these new tracks back on my phone they sound absolutely terrible and unplayable. I thought it was just one track at first. Now every track I have uploaded has the same problem. I have tried every audio format and every bitrate I could and nothing solves the problem. The app also seems to not refresh the current file and will continue to use the same file, even after the old track has been deleted. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the app and nothing works. I'm currently running the newest version of the android app.
*UPDATE* Other tracks have become affected by this and not just my own.

Hi there,

Please see the original post on this topic and continue there so we have all of your reports in one place. Thanks for hanging in there, very much appreciated!

@YerocSema - that does sound odd indeed, however it might still be related to the issue we're currently investigating. Please make sure to troubleshoot this from your end by
a) deleting the app from your phone
b) restarting your phone (make sure you know the PIN of your simcard if it has one)
c) downloading the app again from the Google Play Store.

Cheers
Mathis

Spent a good month on this track, only to figure out I can't listen to it on the SoundCloud iOS App.
It works fine on my phone's browser. @SoundCloud what is the resolution here? We should probably re-open this. It's incorrectly marked as "Solved"
this has been happening to me on my mobile app -iphone_ for the past week, when is it going to be fixed?
so it sounds good through the cloudplayer app but its just strange why it does that it sounds heavily downsampled on the regular app through the phone speaker and has never done that before. actually I kept reuploading and like 1 out of 10 times it will sound good. its a real hit or miss :(
Soundcloud lowered the bitrate of tracks being streamed via the mobile app, and the reason why it sounds better on AUX speakers or headphones is because there is a device inside them that usually fine-tunes the audio to make it sound better, but the phone's built-in speaker doesn't.

I just started noticing, the track sounds amazing on monitors, headphones and stock speakers on both my laptop and phone. The only time it plays bad is ONLY through the PHONE STOCK SPEAKER in the ANDROID APP. If I go on the website on my phone it sounds great. If I download it from my email it plays great on my phone stock speaker. Does not make sense:( Please help.:D
Try this https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mycloudplayers.mycloudplayer&hl=en

but its my own music I want others to hear it high quality.
I just started working on this but... here it is on my BU account https://soundcloud.com/forsai2/ignore-thisp
compare it to any other speaker vs the phone speaker. my friend could hear the problem on his iPhone speaker too

Did you try the app I gave you a link to? It will play in full quality and the GUI is awesome ;)

I mean ive used it before but most people don't use that. will it fix the problem for others ? lol. I'm downloading it anyway.

From what I've been hearing, there's a ton of MP3 fragments on the high end. The kind you'd find on a low quality song on YouTube. It makes it a little hard to listen to music.

Can confirm the app is outputting a lower bitrate. To test compare the same song via the app and through safari on iOS. The amount of phase and overall quality is much lower via the app.
My friend told me to delete the track, log out, log back in and upload the track again. That worked instantly for "I Don't Wanna Be in Love" https://soundcloud.com/setmefreemusic/i-dont-wanna-be-in-love-feat-laylow

But no matter how many times I tried for "Monster" it wouldn't fix it.

I think the only reason that's working is because it's saving the track in the cache..... Does it play in full quality for just you or for your friend also? Remember on desktop it will sound good no matter what so you have to test it on mobile.

I have an iPhone 7, can confirm this shit is still happening. Soundcloud sounds like pure garbage through the iOS app with no options to enable higher quality streaming. Not even signing up for the trial of soundcloud go made a difference. Songs all sound solid through the browser on my PC. Very disappointing, makes me not want to use SC at all...please, fix this.
In order to get better quality through the free trial, you have to download all your likes and playlists, and only the tracks you save then will be full quality. That's the only workaround I know of for iOS as of now.... unless iOS has MyCloud...

I can confirm the old June apk works like a charm. Full bitrate. Here's a link to the apk https://f.apk4fun.com/f.php?p=94101&i=com.soundcloud.android&v=2016.05.30-release&h=Q2F5OWxKU1FRYTMrOUhzbGxhajlwdz09&d=dEh2Qkc0MUEvNWlmNlZyYnppMGhvUT09

Whoops, seems the link is broken. Here's a new link: https://www.apk4fun.com/apk/94101/
Hey there,

Can you please provide us with some example track URLs, we would like to try and test for this issue on our devices.

Thanks,
Jen

I hate to butt in but I do have the same problem. Not only with my tracks, though my friend's tracks as well and a few other people's tracks. In my case, the Hi-Hats alone sound very low quality and faint when played through a cell phone speaker. The melody, the bass, snare sound fine. Here's one of my tracks as a good example. https://soundcloud.com/stankprod/it-took-my-family

I know why this is happening, but I am very upset about it. The Soundcloud app developers lowered the bitrate of streaming from the app. They probably did this to help tracks load faster and lower data usage when on LTE. I think it's really dumb that they would do this because it really makes some of the sounds in a lot of songs (mostly the high ends) sound terrible. I had gotten the soundcloud go trial and I decided to save all my tracks offline. This was a good fix as it would then play the full quality track from local storage instead of the low quality streaming. Problem with this is that after 30days I wasn't allowed to play my tracks from local storage anymore and I had to be forced back to the terrible bitrate streaming again. I saw someone say something about installing an old version from June, probably before they lowered the bitrate, so I'm gonna go ahead and try that. I was using MyCloud Player before all this happened and it was working great up until I started using it on my S7, as it would cause the phone to crash. If you're not using an S7 I highly recommend MyCloud it works great and streams in full quality.
I'm having this issue as well. Not sure why it says "solved" at the top of this page. It seems that frequencies above 10k hz are being streamed at a very low quality while everything below 10k is coming through mostly clear. I'm using an iPhone 6 and never had this issue until yesterday. Here are some tracks that are extremely affected. They play perfectly fine on my phone speakers when downloaded/through itunes but when streaming via soundcloud the aforementioned issues become apparent.

I'm getting the same issue on my iPhone 6s Plus as well. SoundCloud streams fine on my MacBook Pro and Spotify works fine on my iPhone, but when I try to listen through the SoundCloud app on my phone is sounds like I'm listening through a Nokia flip phone. Please fix this issue ASAP because SoundCloud on my phone is now useless and it's my primary music source.

I just started having this problem today, mine is kind of a strange case though, it will play the songs perfectly if my screen is on, but the minute I turn the screen off it goes into a slower playback speed with a kind of reverby skipping (I think that's what everyone else is getting except constantly). Running on a HTC One M8 with Viper One OS. Anyone else having the issue only when your screen goes off? IT happens to any track I listen to, regardless of liked or reposted or whatever. Same issues with headphones or phone speaker, haven't had the chance to try bluetooth yet but I have the sneaking suspicion that it will be the same.
Hello.
I'm also having the same problem with some of my sounds on soundcloud when i play them from my Samsung Galaxy s5 through the browser. And when i play the same tracks from another phone (Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime) it doesn't distort at all.
No problem at all when i play from a desktop.
Can anyone please explain why is this happening ?

I have the same problem, it happens withe every song but i only notice it when im playing the song through the phone speaker or a bluetooth speaker, when i use headphones it sounds fine. I think its only on android phones, because when i use the app in my ipad the quality is alright even on the ipad speaker.
