Welcome to SoundCloud’s advertising policies. As well as complying with our Terms of Use, Community Guidelines and applicable laws and regulations, there are a few things we think you should know about our approach to advertising on the SoundCloud platform. While the below shouldn’t be considered as legal advice, we hope it helps advertisers and brand partners to get the most out of working with SoundCloud.

These policies are divided into the following sections:

Introduction
These policies apply to: anyone who uses our ad products, anyone who matches our definition of an “advertiser” and any content that we consider to be an “ad” (as defined below). As a platform that allows everyone to upload and share their own content, we understand that it can be hard to define what is an ad and what isn’t. If you’re unsure as to whether or not these definitions apply to you, it can’t hurt to stick to these guidelines anyway – it’s less likely you’ll have issues with your content or your use of SoundCloud by doing so.
Advertiser
An advertiser is: any brand, company, organization, or individual that uses the platform primarily to sell, promote, or otherwise communicate products or services to the SoundCloud community.
Ad
An ad is: any piece of content with the primary purpose to sell, promote or otherwise communicate products or services to the SoundCloud community. This includes:
- Content uploaded to a user’s profile, where the content is intended to promote a brand, product or service
- Creative assets delivered as part of a paid advertising or sponsorship campaign
- Any content that is promoted on SoundCloud via native advertising
Guiding Principles
We consider advertisers to be part of the SoundCloud community. We are happy to have you here and hope that you will benefit from being part of the vibrant, diverse, creative community that uses the platform everyday. We have high expectations of all members of the community – as an advertiser, our expectations of you are even higher, given the elevated visibility you will have on the platform. We have two guiding principles that broadly cover these expectations. These principles shape our overall approach to advertising and are at the heart of our ads policies.
Transparency & Honesty
One of our core company values is open – it should therefore come as no surprise that we value transparency and honesty, and expect you to do the same. Your presence on the platform, including the content you share and your promotional activities, should never be deceptive, misleading or untruthful – you must identify yourself as an advertiser, ensure that your ads are clearly identifiable as such, and make it clear that your intention is to promote your brand, product and/or service. In short; we require all ads to be legal, decent, honest and truthful.
Safety & Respect
We aim to create a community where everyone feels respected, and where the safety of our users is paramount. You should never use SoundCloud to promote unsafe or illegal activities, products or services, or to take part in activities forbidden by these policies or our Terms of Use or Community Guidelines.
The Rules
Overview
  • Our rights: We reserve the right to reject or remove any ads in our sole discretion, including ads that violate these policies, endanger the safety of the community or that are otherwise contrary to our business interests, guiding principles or brand values.
  • Obey the law: It goes without saying that your use of the platform, including for advertising purposes, must comply with all applicable laws and regulations.
  • Stick to our Terms and Community Guidelines: As a member of the SoundCloud community, your activity, including the content you share, is subject to our Terms of Use, Community Guidelines, Privacy Policy and Cookies Policy. Please make sure you are familiar with these terms, and check regularly for any updates.
  • Take our principles to heart: These policies contain as much detail as possible, but like our platform, these policies will continue to evolve over time. You should always keep our guiding principles in mind, even if something is not explicitly prohibited by these policies. If you think your use of the platform may contradict our guiding principles or any other section of our policies, this might not be the place for you.
  • Creator association: Please keep in mind that some creators may object to certain ads or brand associations involving their content. Even if your ad and all associated content complies with our ads policies, you may not be able to advertise against specific content, or associate your brand with specific artists.

Pricing & currency
All prices stated in your ads should be accurate and transparent. Don’t use misleading pricing practices or language which could be misinterpreted by the community. Specifically:
  • Free means free; if there are associated costs with claiming any “free” offer, be transparent about it
  • If you are promoting a subscription-based product or service, you must clearly represent the recurring price, related billing interval and any other information a customer may need to make an informed decision before subscribing
In addition to the above, all ads targeted at European consumers must also:
  • Include taxes within the stated price; it is a requirement for prices to be tax-inclusive
  • Display prices in local currency. Ads targeted at UK consumers can include non-UK currencies, provided that the price is not misleading and payment can be made in those currencies
In addition, all ads must include the following information:
  • The name of the advertiser, including its location
  • A clear statement of the features associated with the relevant product or service
  • An outline of any associated costs e.g. shipping
  • Details of the consumer’s right to withdraw or cancel their order
Unauthorised association
Your ads must not:
  • Include any SoundCloud name or logo
  • Replicate or mimic any element of the SoundCloud experience
  • Create or imply any endorsement of your brand, product or services by SoundCloud or any SoundCloud creator
Language
Your ads should be understood by the people you’re targeting; use language that the majority of people in the targeted region will understand.
User experience
All ads on SoundCloud, including text and images, must be legible and clear. Additionally, display ads mustn’t contain any kind of animation that automatically plays without an individual’s interaction.
Advertising Rules
There are certain categories of products and services that you can’t promote on SoundCloud at all. This ensures that we can uphold our community values and guiding principles, as well as complying with legal regulations in certain jurisdictions. You cannot advertise the following products or services.
Products and services that infringe third party rights
We don’t allow ads for products or services that promote the distribution, duplication or sale of copyrighted content (other than the advertiser’s own content). Additionally, we don’t allow ads for products or services that sell or promote the sale of counterfeit goods or engage in copyright or trademark infringement of any kind. This includes, but isn’t limited to:
  • Sale of unauthorized imitations of designer goods
  • Sale of fake documents e.g. passports, social security cards and fake ID’s
Illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia and drug tests
SoundCloud does not permit ads for illegal drugs, drug paraphernalia or related accessories. This includes:
  • Aids intended to help pass drug tests
  • Anabolic steroids, bodybuilding steroid supplements, and steroid supplement
  • Products and services designed to help others access illegal drugs, including dispensary directories
This does not apply to:
  • Ads for drug education and rehabilitation, including rehab programs, documentaries and other educational resources
  • News stories or features on current events
Adult products and services
Ads for adult entertainment products or services are not permitted on SoundCloud. This includes, but is not limited to:
  • Sex toys
  • Prostitution/escort services
  • Exotic dancers
  • Pornographic movies, websites, books, etc.
  • Erotic massage services
  • Products to increase libido
This does not apply to:
  • Sex education products and services
  • STD or sexual health awareness campaigns
  • News stories related to sex, which are not overtly sexual in nature
Tobacco products
SoundCloud prohibits advertising for all tobacco and tobacco-related products. This includes:
  • Cigarettes, tobacco, tobacco pipes, vaping products and cigars
  • Tobacco manufacturers
  • Rolling papers and other smoking paraphernalia
This does not apply to:
  • Products and services used to aid smoking cessation, including nicotine patches and e-cigarettes or vaporizers; when promoted as an alternative to tobacco
  • News stories and information about smoking and tobacco products
  • Anti-smoking information or educational resources
Product and services with unsubstantiated health benefits
SoundCloud doesn’t allow ads of any kind for personal care products that create unrealistic expectations or claim unproven health benefits for product being advertised e.g. “this soap will cure cancer”. This also applies to any unregulated dietary supplements or herbal drugs.
Financial services (other than retail banks, mortgage lenders and insurance companies)
The promotion of financial services is limited to regulated retail banks, mortgage lenders and insurance companies. All other financial services are prohibited from advertising on SoundCloud.
Weapons and weapon accessories
Regardless of the legality of weapon sales in your country, we prohibit all ads for weapons and associated products and services on SoundCloud.

This includes ads for:
  • Firearms and related accessories
  • Weapon training programs
  • Bombs and bomb making equipment
  • Edged weapons (such as knives, machetes, etc.)
  • Weapon accessories
Political advertising
Outside the US SoundCloud does not permit any political advertising on the platform. This applies to ads for or by:
  • Political parties
  • Candidates for political office
  • Lobbyists
  • Any individual or entity seeking to influence the outcome of an election
This does not apply to:
  • Non-profit awareness groups
  • Charity campaigns, disaster relief and other non-political fundraising campaigns
  • News and information about political matters in general, including elections, from those who are not political parties, candidates or individuals or entities seeking to influence the outcome of an election
Religious organisations
SoundCloud does not allow any ads for religious organisations or for any specific religion or belief system, or any ad that contains religion as a primary theme. The same applies to any organisation or ad that promotes atheism, humanism or other system based on an absence of faith.
Unauthorized access to systems, devices, and/or information
SoundCloud does not allow the promotion of any kind of product or service designed to provide unauthorized access to systems, devices or information. This includes:
  • Sites and apps that provide instructions, means or equipment to illegally access or tamper with websites, servers, software, phones or any other type of communication service or device
  • Any tool or software that can be used to bypass digital content management systems, including any measures designed to protect copyrighted content e.g. stream rippers or similar products or services
  • Any tool that allows for unauthorized intrusion on an individual or which could be used to track or otherwise gain unauthorized access to personal information, including any spyware products or tools
Advertising in violation of trade restrictions
You can’t promote goods or services in violation of applicable trade embargoes, trade sanctions and/or export control laws, including any advertising for or by any individual and/or entity that is subject to such sanctions. Please refer to the following webpages for policy and embargo information:
Endangered species
SoundCloud prohibits ads for any product or service that exploits or is derived from any endangered species, as classified by the World Wildlife Federation.
Academic aids
SoundCloud doesn’t allow ads for academic aids, degrees from unaccredited institutions, and/or unauthorized student services. This includes:
  • “Test-taking” services (i.e., where an individual takes an exam for someone else)
  • Sale of degrees or academic transcripts
This does not apply to:
  • Ads for test preparation services
  • Promotion of accredited universities and colleges
Restricted Ads
There are certain categories of products and services which can be advertised on SoundCloud, provided that specific restrictions are adhered to. This includes all of the following categories.
Alcohol
In general, advertising designed to promote alcohol brands, and sale of alcohol in general, is allowed on SoundCloud, provided the following requirements are met.
  • Ads must be compliant with all applicable laws and industry standards for the locales you are targeting
  • Ads must not imply that the consumption of alcohol can enhance social, sexual, professional, intellectual, or athletic standing or success
  • Ads must not target any individual below the legal drinking age in the location you are targeting, or in any way suggest, encourage, advocate, or entice underage drinking
  • Ads must not portray excessive drinking in a positive light or feature binge or competitive drinking or any other irresponsible or anti-social drinking practices
  • Ads must not imply that consuming alcohol provides therapeutic or any other health benefits, or can be used as a method to overcome personal problems
  • Ads must not associate alcohol consumption with activities that require care or skill that would be impaired under the influence of drinking alcohol, such as driving a car
  • Ads must not show any individual under the influence of alcohol, either explicitly or by implication
When targeting the following countries, these specific additional requirements apply:
  • United States: you can only target individuals aged 21 and older
  • United Kingdom: you can only target individuals aged 18 and older. Nobody who is, or appears to be, under the age of 25 can appear in an ad for an alcohol. Additionally, alcohol ads must comply with the Portman Code and the CAP Code and should carry a reference to drinking in moderation, such as the “Drink Aware” logo.
Prescription and Non-Prescription Pharmaceuticals
SoundCloud allows advertising of prescription and non-prescription pharmaceuticals., provided that (i) advertising of prescription pharmaceuticals is solely permitted in the United States and its territories; and (ii) all such ads must adhere to all relevant local regulations and standards. In the UK, this means such ads must be pre-cleared by the PAGB. In the US, this means that such ads must adhere to FDA and FTC guidelines.

The advertising of illegal drugs is not permitted.
Birth control products
Ads for birth control products, including condoms, is permitted, provided that ads don’t contain overly sexual themes or imagery. For clarity, prescription birth control products may solely be advertised on SoundCloud in the United States and its territories.
Medical products and services
SoundCloud allows ads for the following medical products and services, provided that these ads are honest, accurate, don’t make exaggerated claims, and don’t promote the use of products or services in a manner other than that intended by the appropriate regulatory body.
  • Ads for medical practices, including doctors, dentists and surgeries
  • Ads for pharmacies and drugstores, provided that they don’t promote the online sale or refill of prescription drugs
  • Ads for dietary supplements, provided that all local regulations (including disclosure requirements) are met
The advertising of specific medical procedures, including cosmetic surgery, is not permitted.
Financial services
Ads for regulated retail banks, mortgage lenders and insurance providers are permitted, provided that these ads:
  • Comply with all applicable laws, regulations, industry codes of conduct and guidelines
  • Provide all necessary disclosures
  • Specify the type of financial service being promoted
  • Clearly identify the advertiser, and the fact that they are promoting financial services
When targeting the following countries, these additional requirements apply:
  • Ireland: The Central Bank of Ireland must authorize investment and banking service advertisers
  • United Kingdom: The Financial Conduct Authority must authorize all financial service advertisers. Additionally:
    - The Ministry of Justice must authorize all claims-management advertisers
    - Credit card promotions must contain the following information: Interest rates, Credit limit, Fees relating to credit, Cash price/amount of advance payments, Advertiser’s name and address
  • United States:
    - You cannot advertise for mortgage assistance relief services and/or short-term loans
    - Ads for free credit reports are allowed, but such ads cannot tie those reports to a recurring subscription service
    - All advertisements for the sale of securities must comply with all U.S. federal and state laws and regulations, as well as industry regulations e.g. those published by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA)
Dating sites and services
Ads for dating sites and services are allowed on SoundCloud, provided that you clearly state the name of the advertiser in the text of the ad. Ads in this category must not:
  • Contain pornographic, vulgar or profane language, nudity or sexually provocative images or text, or generally have an overtly sexual emphasis
  • Imply that a user has been, or may be, interacted with in any way e.g. “1 message received”
  • Implicitly or explicitly promote casual sex, affairs, or hook-ups
  • Imply the presence of underage individuals
  • Promote “mail-order brides” or similar matchmaking services
  • Refer to individual attributes, including age e.g. “Are you over 50 and lonely?”
  • Suggest that people will meet or connect with any particular individual
Gambling
Ads for land-based casinos or online gambling establishments are allowed on SoundCloud, but on a restricted basis depending on where the ad is targeted. You are responsible for ensuring that your ad remains in compliance with all applicable local laws and regulations.

Ads for the following are permitted, provided they comply with all local laws and regulations:
  • Lotteries
  • Games of skill
  • Websites or apps providing odds, tips, handicapping, or similar gambling aids
  • Sports betting
  • Online fantasy sports sites
  • Bingo
  • Scratch-card games
  • Games or apps played for money
This does not apply to:
  • News and/or information about fantasy sports
  • Ads for gambling accessories, such as poker chips
  • Ads for hotels that also contain a casino, provided the focus of the ad is on the hotel
When targeting the United States, ads for lotteries are only permitted where the lottery is licensed to operate and where the ad is targeted to consumers in that licensed area.

When targeting the United Kingdom, the following also applies:
  • Ads must comply with the Gambling Act 2005 and related legislation, including guidance from the Gambling Commission
  • Advertisers must be licensed in the UK, Channel Islands or a ‘white-listed’ jurisdiction
  • Ads must be responsible and conducted in accordance with the CAP code and carry a message about moderation such as the “Gamble Aware” logo
Remember that ads for anything gambling-related are often restricted by law, and these restrictions can often vary significantly from territory to territory. You are solely responsible for ensuring compliance with the laws of the jurisdiction that you are targeting.
Content Rules
No matter what you are promoting, the following types of content can’t be included in your ads, or anywhere on your SoundCloud profile.
Content that infringes third party rights
You are solely responsible for all content that you make available on SoundCloud, whether on your profile or as an ad elsewhere on the platform. You must only use content in your ads that you have all necessary rights to use. If your ad features content created by a third party, it is your sole responsibility to obtain the necessary rights and licenses for inclusion within your ad before you make that ad available on SoundCloud.Please note that this policy not only includes content within ads, but also promotional activity on SoundCloud. As a brand, you must not use the content of any other Soundcloud user to promote your product or service without that user’s consent. If you’re interested in pairing your brand with an artist on SoundCloud, please contact our sales team to discuss the opportunity.
Hateful or abusive content
We have a zero-tolerance approach to any content or activity that (i) promotes, advocates or encourages hatred, stereotypes, discrimination, violence against or (ii) negatively portrays or attacks others based on (including, without limitation) things like race, cultural identity or ethnic background, religious beliefs, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, or other characteristics associated with systemic discrimination or marginalization. Additionally, we take allegations of fear mongering, abusive or threatening behaviour towards these individuals or groups seriously. Any ad that features themes of hate, abuse, or that may place people at risk of harm will be removed from SoundCloud.

This does not apply to:
  • Anti-hate campaigns
  • News stories or features on current events
  • Promotion of documentaries or educational resources
Dangerous or unlawful activity
Ads mustn’t depict or promote dangerous or unlawful activities which are easily imitable. This includes the use of illegal drugs, restricted goods or other unlawful or dangerous behaviours.
Pornographic or adult content
Ads cannot contain content that is predominantly sexual in nature, including nude images, depictions or detailed descriptions of sexual acts, adult toys or products, or sexually obscene language. This doesn’t apply to the use of profanity within ads.
Violent content
Content with excessive violence or shocking themes isn’t permitted on SoundCloud. Your ads shouldn’t contain graphic depictions of violence – real or otherwise – including self-harm or death. Additionally, any gratuitously violent imagery intended to shock or terrify audiences is prohibited. This includes violence against animals.

This does not apply to:
  • News stories or features on current events
  • Promotion of documentaries or educational resources
Hacking or phishing attempts
Your content must not contain any software that results in a deceptive or unexpected user experience, including; spyware, malware, or similar software. Additionally, ads must not link to external websites which contain or promote such products.
To sum up
Remember that you’re part of our community – don’t break the rules and respect the guiding principles outlined above. These policies are subject to change at any time, without advance notice.
